Laura, a woman who lives in front our home said: “It is a delight to walk to school every morning because I can enjoy our neighborhood beauty.” In addition, we have the advantage of the splendor during any season....
Storytelling is a universal language and needs to be expressed in different forms. When students with strong writing skills work but fewer artistic or music skills collaborated with students who with musical, singing and drawing ability while lacking some basic writing skills, creating the same story in each modality not enriched the story, it enhanced the creative and writing skills of each student.
Also, the other apartment buildings on my block are rather chic, or at least presentable, so of course I ended up in the one eyesore in the whole neighborhood.

Each weekend, Patti hosted a global online text chat with students ages 8-15. In return for the interview, she asked me to meet online with her students and talk about the writing life of a freelance journalist. I accepted her offer.
That weekend, I met her online with students from the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, the Middle East and South America. After a few minutes discussing my experiences as a writer, one of the students asked me if we could write something together online. I agreed and we started writing a story together.
As we worked together collaboratively on this text chat, I realized that I could watch them think about the writing process as they engaged in the act of writing. The teacher side of me was captivated. A simple text chat could be transformed into a teaching space and writing space.
However, as time went on Neighborhood Watch Programs took on a proactive role in helping to reduce crime by encouraging individuals to collaborate with their local law enforcement agency to monitor and report suspicious activities in the community....
I love my new neighborhood—it balances my life, shows me real color, and saves me from things far worse than litter or a stolen Subaru—like the blindness and coded racism of privilege.
In my “bad” neighborhood, we sit on front porches, hear the neighbor girls’ jazz double-dutch jump rope riffs, and buy snow cones on hot days out of an old guy’s shopping cart.
What did you see? How would you understand that? How is the community like? What do they do? Do they get together? Who is working? Who is relaxing? How do old and young people behave? How does the area look like, feel like, smell, or sound like? What kind of business do you see? What language do people speak there? How do Latinos behave and build a community here? Do you know anything about this neighborhood’s past?
I was hooked and that was the beginning of more than a decade of teaching writing globally with kids online and teaching teachers how to integrate the web into their curriculum. We brought together children from the Middle East, North and South America and Europe to write, draw, and share experiences in their own styles and their own languages simultaneously with English during events like the Oklahoma bombings, the Bosnia War and September 11th. most importantly, they developed a strong global bond with their peers through their writing and other creative skills.
I believe visiting the old neighborhood is a necessity to me. It tells me all that I am and all that I am not. I can revisit chapters of my life story while simply sitting at a red light. Who knew the distance between two stop signs could be so profound?
