Men and women also have rights to equal remuneration, benefits and treatment in respect of work of equal or comparable value. All workers should be accorded equal consideration in the evaluation and assessment of the quality of their work regardless of gender. Additionally, it is important for workplaces to provide equal opportunities when it comes to promotion, job security, and all benefits and conditions of service such as training and career advancement. In today's society, particularly in the United States, an individual entering a non-traditional sport for his/her gender takes on many tasks besides playing the sport, the individual also takes on the criticism (good or bad) of people who play the sport and those who watch it too....
The Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights, charged with enforcing Title IX, is underfunded and, despite the reluctance of schools to comply with gender equity, has never pulled federal funding from schools or colleges that discriminate against women and girls.
While almost all of these lawsuits have so far been resolved in favor of women athletes and coaches, this is an expensive and time-consuming avenue to gender equity.
For instance, in many professions women continue to earn less than men, and are less likely to advance in their careers compared to men. Similarly, men still encounter more challenges in accessing family-friendly work policies, or flexible working arrangements compared to their women counterparts. Real gender equality in the workplace can only be attained when employees have access to and enjoy the same rewards, resources and opportunities regardless of whether they are a woman or a man.
When Title IX was first passed, the National Collegiate Athletics Administration led a campaign to have football exempted from gender equity requirements, arguing that football teams produce profits which fund other sports.
