The Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF) provides scholarships to black women who would like to study engineering or other related fields. All applicants are personally interviewed and the winners are chosen on a basis of leadership potential, financial need, and academics. To learn more about this scholarship opportunity, visit .
The JRF scholarships provide funding for four-year degrees to students who are economically disadvantaged and otherwise underserved. Named for baseball great, Jackie Robinson, the foundation has been touted by the New York Times for being the “best educational effort in the country.” JRF scholarships are awarded by a group of eight regional committees composed of civic and academic leaders.
Each year the NLC hosts the Jerry Malloy Negro League Conference. Some initiatives of the conference include donations of books to local schools and/or libraries, raising funds for headstones of unmarked graves of former Negro League players, and the awarding of scholarships.
1. Current high school senior.
2. Anticipating completion of high school diploma at the time of application.
3. Planning to pursue a degree at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution.
4. Carrying a minimum 2.5 GPA at the end of their junior year of high school.

3. The submission must include a letter of recommendation from a high school teacher, guidance counselor or a school administrator, confirming graduation and GPA.
Students must write an essay of 1,000 words or less on one of the following questions:

“What is the legacy of Jackie Robinson?”
The Planning Committee of the Jerry Malloy Negro League Committee will review all the applications and make two selections. Note, only one essay will be accepted per applicant. The scholarship winners will be notified by April 15, 2011.

All Clubs playing at home on Saturday, April 15th will commemorate Jackie Robinson Day with special on-field, pregame ceremonies in their ballparks. Home Clubs will feature Jackie Robinson Day jeweled bases and lineup cards. The Los Angeles Dodgers will be joined by the Robinson Family (Rachel, Sharon and David), Dodgers owner Magic Johnson as well as Baseball Hall of Famers Frank Robinson and Sandy Koufax and Hall of Fame Broadcaster Vin Scully in the unveiling of a statue dedicated to Jackie. The statue depicts a young Jackie Robinson in his rookie season (1947) sliding into home plate in a salute to his signature playing style.
In addition to the weekend’s celebration of women in baseball, USA Baseball’s National Member Organizations, which sanction leagues across the country and around the world, reaffirmed their commitment to providing girls opportunities to participate in their baseball leagues. Leaders at AABC, American Legion, Babe Ruth League, Dixie Boys and Majors, Dixie Youth, Little League International, NABF, NFHS, PONY, USSSA and MLB’s Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (RBI) program are all working toward growing the opportunities afforded to girls in the game.
